Natural Hair Guide: Beginners Edition

“I was shy, but it came out in a big personality. My turning point was when I let my hair go naturally.” - Tracee Lee Ross. I have customers come in my store everyday saying “ I wish I could wear my natural hair but I don’t have time” or “I would take better care of my hair but I don’t even know what to use or do!” I’m here to help you with everything you need to know to let your natural hair shine!

Here’s how we’re going to start! Our first step and one of the most important is … PRODUCTS!! During their natural hair journey, some will go through hundreds and hundreds of products. The most effective way to avoid this is by knowing what you need. Top five products you will need are shampoo, conditioner, leave-in conditioner, styler, and an oil.

When choosing a shampoo, you need with a moisturizing or clarifying shampoo! If your hair is dry and brittle, you need a shampoo which will not strip your hair but add moisture while cleansing it such as Mielle Babassu Conditioning Shampoo. If your hair has a lot of product build up, you need a shampoo which can break through and truly clean your scalp without damaging your hair. My top 2 clarifying shampoos would be Aunt Jackie’s Power Wash Clarifying Shampoo & Nature’s Little Secret Lemon and Rosemary Clarifying Shampoo. We all know what comes after shampooing .. Conditioner.

Some’s favorite part and some’s worst part. One of the most important things to consider when picking your conditioner is MOISTURE! You want your conditioner to moisturize and soften your hair before detangling. My personal favorites at the moment are Difeel Biotin Pro- Growth Conditioner & Nature’s Little Secret Rose Hydrating Conditioner.

Once you have washed and detangled, it’s time for your Leave - In Conditioner. DO NOT FORGET THIS STEP! This is going to add moisture to your hair. Leave- In is a lot lighter and less dense than conditioner. Depending on your hair time, many prefer a spray leave-in like Mielle White Peony Leave-In or ( a classic ) Crème of Nature’s Argon Oil Leave-In Spray.

Now it’s time for your styler! You can use a cream or styler to start styling your hair. If you have high porosity, use a heavy cream such as As I Am Double Butter or The Mane Choice Moisturizing Styling Cream to keep your hair hydrated longer. Another great styler for all hair types is Camille Rose Curl Maker. ( We’ll get more into styling soon )

You’re almost done. Just one last step .. OIL! I know a lot of people skip this step ( I’ve been guilty of it a few times smh) but OILING YOUR SCALP IS A NECESSITY! One of the best oils (all my customers will agree) is Mielle Rosemary Mint Scalp & Hair Strengthening Oil. Now that you know the basics, you have all the power to start a wonderful and fulfilling natural hair journey!
